Dear Friends,
I haven’t written a yearly letter in so long, I hope you all remember who Mercy is……. So hello to everyone since …… ?
Currently I’m at our retirement center suffering from a disease called Aging. I am – as of yesterday {St. Patrick’s Day} – 81 years old and can’t believe it. I am having trouble with my legs. Can’t seem to controll them and to top that off I am having trouble with my back. Other than that, I am FINE and you all know what that means…. FINE = Frustrating – Insecure – Narcissistic & Emotional I came here after three years at the Catholic Worker in Tacoma and that was a real experience. Living in a lay-community where most everything was decided by consensus. I was living with Bill Bichel, S.J. and a big leader in the Peace Movement. What was remarkable about him was the impressions he left on the community. He lived in that community almost his entire life and his mark was left on Tacoma in a fantastic way.
One story about him says it all. He was going in to the court house to check in with his probation officer and at the check point one of the guards requested that he remove his suspenders and Bix objected. “If I take them off, I won’t be able to put them back on because of my arthritic hands and……..” That same guard again responded, “I don’t have any trouble doing that” Bix returned with “Well, sonny! I’m eighty years old and……” “You’re not my father…….” The guard retorted, but the suspenders finally came off and Bix went through the gate and around the corner to take his pants off in order to get his suspenders back on. Another guard shouted, “ He’s got his pants off!” He was finally saved when his probation officer rescued him. This event, all in itself has some very interesting things to reflect upon if one has eye s to see. I leave this idea for you to look at.
Anyway……..back to me. I might have to move to California since we became one Province. We’ve been combining our facilities so the older Jesuits are moving south and the younger ones, the administrators are coming north. They are taking our headquarters in Portland, Oregon.
I dare not leave though, before I present you with this golden opportunity.
Included with my best wishes is a flyer for my book. Now……. You can obtain it two ways: #1 = Free or # 2= Send me whatever you want and YES I did write it myself. Sometimes I marvel at that myself.
This isn’t much, but hopefully enough to indicate you’re still in my thoughts. May Our loving Lord bless you with His abundant self as a light to others of His existence in this world of darkness.
God be with You,
